a by-no-means comprehensive list of books that have influenced me in some way.

and some badly-written descriptions of why.

1. dangerous angels - francesca lia block
while not the first book i read by FLB, dangerous angels was one of the most significant. i was in middle school and couldn't stand anything about it. but in this book i found magic and i found love. i was witch baby, wishing to be cherokee bat. i was weetzie, waiting for my secret agent lover man.

2. all about love - bell hooks / the art of loving - erich fromm
more recently, i have been consumed by learning about love. i was introduced to bell hooks by a college class on peace studies and through hooks i learned about fromm. i cannot even begin to say how eye-opening these have been for me. i realized the reason i was always so unhappy in my relationships: i didn't even know the definition of love. my concept of love had been altogether incorrect. i'm still learning, redefining, searching for more answers but i couldn't have begun to start all of this without these books.

bell hooks presents a feminist angle while fromm explores many types of love (and though he is pretty much a heterosexist, he makes a lot of good points otherwise). fromm's book also has one of my favorite quotes:

"If I truly love one person I love all persons, I love the world, I love life. If I can say to somebody else, 'I love you,' I must be able to say, 'I love in you everybody, I love through you the world, I love in you also myself.'"

3. animal, vegetable, miracle - barbara kingsolver
this book chronicles a family's attempt to become "locavores," aka those who only eat locally-grown food. it not only challenged what i always thought about the food i ate, but also my attitudes towards food. this is something i want to do eventually, once i have the choice (my family is very resistant to my nagging). it has made me keenly aware and paranoid and suspicious when i see anything from a box proclaiming to be a miracle food. the only miracle foods are, you know, real ones.

4. the bell jar - sylvia plath
there is no denying this is the book that most of my friends associate with me. i've read it over and over again, underlining, finding new things. i first read it in middle school (a time when i began to develop taste) and the rest is history. oh, angst, how i don't miss you. (i own three copies of this book, all with different covers. hah!)

p.s. this song reminds me of whales and is so, so lovely: shot in the back of the head - moby
